Today's market

March 18, 2024 at 1:45 p.m. EDT

Michael P. Reinking, CFA
Sr. Market Strategist

The week is starting off on a positive note as the AI optimism was palatable out of the gate ahead of today’s Nvidia GTC event. Reports that Apple (~+1%) is in discussions with Alphabet (~+5%) to use Google Gemini AI in iPhones is also driving both of those stocks higher, both of which had been underperforming recently. Tech stocks are leading to the upside though Nvidia has pulled back to unchanged and the newest member of the S&P 500, Super Micro Computer, is down nearly 10% on its first day in the index. Within large cap stocks there is broad participation with every sector in the S&P 500 trading higher. Last week we started to see small/mid-cap stocks underperform as yields moved higher and that underperformance continues today though the performance gap has narrowed throughout the day.

The NYSE sent a crew to Madrona’s IA Summit in Seattle, where we had a chance to meet the leaders of exciting companies in AI and ask them to share questions and prompts on a variety of thought-provoking topics. But this isn't just another Q&A series, we took those answers and transformed them into art – using AI, of course.
